We used Starluck for our trip to Masai Mara in December 2023 and there were errors in their itinerary and miscommunication around park fees: - The itinerary they shared upon booking included a game drive on the 3rd day and this was canceled without notifying us. The trip was advertised as "3-days of unlimited game drives" on Instagram and this is completely FALSE. If anything it is around ~1 day in the park and you pay for two nights at the lodge. This is extremely inefficient because you spend about 12-14 hours roundtrip driving back and forth from Nairobi to the Mara (not including all the wasted time with pick-ups and drop-offs in the shared vehicle for several different lodges), for less than 12 hours total in the park. - We also triple-checked the park fees with the travel agent before booking, checked that 1 day of fees is valid for a 24-hour period, and confirmed with several messages in writing that there would be no additional fees, only to find out that the daily park fees were higher and only valid for 12 hours than advertised when we entered the park on day 1. They said that these park fees had changes recently; however, the change was made on July 1st 2023 so they should have been well aware of this. This made it even more frustrating that we were not able to have sufficient time in the park given how much we were unexpetedly paying. After several messages and phone calls during our vacation, explaining these errors to their team, they finally came back with a 'resolution' - rather than any kind of refund, they offered a credit voucher for a future booking for less than a mere $10 USD per person (for 2 people in the book), which is less than 5% of the total booking cost! Of course, we don't plan to use their service again and we rejected their voucher. Don't fall for their false advertising and book with an agency that provides accurate information about their safaris.

Not having dealt with online agencies before, I was skeptical and hesitant about them. But they handled me well and my booking actualised and I had a memorable weekend at the Sun N Sand hotel thanks to them! I give them 5 stars for excellent service! 🥂 To many more future dealings...

Thank you for helping my family organise a weekend stay in Nakuru. Communication was prompt, clear and concise. And despite the short notice you guys came through. Definitely using your services for any travelling needs we may have in the future.

This is the probably the worst safari experiences I ever had with Startluck Travel. We had a group of 8 people and booked a 10-day with 9-night package service with them. The two drivers (also the guides) assigned to us were totally unprofessional, especially the guy who name is Carlos. The driver Carlos has been playing the game during the safari with us all the time. For example, during one of the safari days, he left and dropped us in the middle of the game drive and asked us to join the other group to continue the drive, as he told us he needed to go to pick up the park tickets and had his car have maintenance service. Also, one of the days, he just disappeared and remained unreachable for the entire day, as a result, we lost one day to experience the game drive and were left in the hotel for doing nothing. The company Starluck did NOTHING and was unable to resolve the issue after receiving our reports and complaints, which was totally a disappointment. That being said, this is ABSOLUTLY not a company to recommend.

StarLuck Travel Ltd planned a safari for my family and I to Nakuru National Park during the festive holidays and the experience was fantastic. The booking was on short notice but James came through and delivered a very nice Safari Landcruiser that exceeded our expectations. The driver came earlier than expected and was really patient with us as we prepared to leave. He is very professional and has a good understanding of the animals found in the park. He took us to the park and brought us back safely. I would recommend them for all your safari plans. Asanteni sana StarLuck Travel Ltd!

I just got back from Kenya but had horrible experience with Starluck Travel. We were a group of 8 people and assigned with 2 drivers, but one of the drivers who name is Carlos was totally a jerk and left us in the middle of the game drive during the day, and the next day, he just disappeared and remained unreachable for the entire day and lef us in the hotel for doing nothing. It was a total disaster to book the safari with this company and it ruined my entire trip and experience.

I had an amazing trip to Amboseli. The tour guide / driver was excellent in all ways. The Ol Tukai Lodge was perfect. Nothing could have been better. The game drive Sunday morning was fantastic. I could see lions walking with the sunrise in the background. Very beautiful. I also got to see all the elephants I wanted to see. Thank you Starluck Travel and Doreen for arranging this tour!

Frequently Asked Questions

Money Exchange

Do not exchange money on the street. You may be approached by someone willing to give you a 50% to 70% premium for your dollars. This is what is known as the black market. It is illegal. Do NOT, therefore, get involved. Hotels, Camps and Lodges can change money but sometimes their exchange rate is lower. There are several foreign exchange bureaux in Nairobi offering competitive rates.

Tipping

Most people, when visiting a foreign country, like to be given some guidelines regarding tipping. Bearing in mind that tipping is an extremely personal matter, the below are mere guidelines. Ultimately, expectations are left to the discretion of the individual safari member. However, if in doubt, please check with either your hostess or host for advice.

Anti-malaria medication

We strongly recommend that you take anti-malaria medication. Malaria is rare in most highland areas, but traveling in the hot bush, and coastal areas requires precautions. If, on your return home, you develop influenza symptoms, please see your doctor immediately as you may well have contracted malaria.

Credit cards

Credit cards such as American Express, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in most camps, hotels and lodges.

Punctuality

Please be on time when you meet at your mini-vans or land cruisers for game drives.

Driver guide/safari guide

Get to know both your driver-guide and your Safari guide. Their knowledge of Africa is a bottomless treasure of travel. Be friendly. Sometimes, at the outset of a safari, the driver-guides can be shy and need encouragement to open up. Ask a lot of questions. Don’t be afraid to make requests of both your driver-guide and your safari guide.

Clothing

Safari attire is casual and comfortable. Dress mainly for outdoor comfort with a change of informal clothes for the evening. Evenings and early mornings can be chilly especially on the mountain areas. Warm jerseys, socks and walking shoes or sneakers are recommended. Footwear should be low-heeled and comfortable. There is not much walking and you stay in your vehicle during game runs. Bring a light-weight raincoat and a hat for sun protection. Roof hatches on safari vehicles are left open whilst game viewing. Although evening wear is informal, some Clubs and restaurants in Nairobi and on safari do require gentlemen to wear a tie and jacket for dinner, and ladies, equivalent evening attire.

Drinking water

In Nairobi and on safari, we recommend that you do not drink the water from the taps and even out of the thermos or flasks provided. We recommend instead that you purchase bottled water at the lodges, camps & hotels. Use mouthwash to brush and wash your teeth. Ice is generally frozen from boiled water and is ok for consumption.

Food

Food in Kenya is delicious, varied and plentiful, succulent crayfish from the Indian Ocean, smoked sailfish (Kenya’s equivalent to smoked salmon), English roast beef, Molo lamb, and much more. Kenyas’ famed fruits abound – pineapples, pawpaw, mangoes, avocados, passion fruits, banana, pears, and strawberries to name a few. Fresh vegetables are equally abundant. The hotels, lodges and camps in which you stay are renowned for their high standard of cuisine. However, a change of climate and traveling can, in a few instances, cause travelers diarrhea, a minor complaint not comparable in severity with ‘gypie tummy’. Eating in moderation, avoiding cold buffet lunch tables that have been exposed to the mid-day sun, and fasting for a day (whilst drinking plenty of bottled water) should you be stricken, are sensible precautions.

Sensible safekeeping of passport and valuables

Please keep your passport and money on you at all times. Never leave money or valuables in your room or in your vehicle. You can keep valuables in security boxes at the hotels and lodges. Be especially careful whilst in camps, hotels and lodges and on special excursions such as boat-rides. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
