Itinerary
Day 1 : Edinburgh - Loch Ness
Location: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Glen Coe, Fort William, Loch Ness, Inverness
Our tour begins in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh before travelling across to Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, where the remaining members of the group will join the tour. From here we will begin our journey north, with our first stop taking you to the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. We will stop in a picturesque village, where you can relax over a cup of coffee or take in the fantastic views of the largest expanse of freshwater in the UK, Loch Lomond. Your driver-guide will tell you the history and theories behind the famous Scottish song named after the Loch, whilst you drive along the Loch’s Bonnie Banks and you enjoy the stunning scenery of this area. As you continue further north into the Scottish Highlands you’ll watch in awe as the landscape becomes more and more dramatic. You will pass through the wild expanses of Rannoch Moor before reaching Glen Coe. Whilst here you will be able to learn the brutal story of the MacDonald Clan massacre and take in the weeping waterfalls and incredible mountains that inhabit this incredible glen, which contains some of the most iconic scenery in Scotland. We will then travel to the Highland town of Fort William, which marks the end of Scotland’s oldest and most popular long-distance walks, The West Highland Way. Here, you can take in views of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, standing at 1,345 metres above sea level. We will then travel through the Great Glen and pass along the shores of Loch Ness, on our way to our overnight stop in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. ...more ...less
Day 2 : Explore Skye
Location: Isle of Skye, Portree, Trotternish, Inverness
Meals Included: Breakfast
Your experienced and knowledgeable guide will use their knowledge ensure you can the most out of your day visiting the dramatic Isle of Skye. The exact itinerary for this day will vary from tour to tour, but will be based on a variety of factors such as the weather, your group and local events. You will enjoy sights such as the craggy Cuillin Mountains, these sharp peaks which rise up from the flatness of the surrounding terrain, are the dominating feature of the island and can be seen from across the island. We will also include a stop at Portree, the colourful capital of Skye. Overlooking a sheltered bay, this scenic fishing village has a variety of food options, making it a perfect lunch spot. The town is ideally located for excellent Fish & Chips, or you could enjoy some whisky in one of the excellent pubs. One area of Skye that we are very likely to visit is the Trotternish Peninsula. This is the most northerly of Skye’s peninsulas and it contains some of the most striking and unique landscapes in Scotland. Here we will stop for photographs at The Kilt Rock, Mealt Waterfall and The Old Man of Storr. At the end of our day exploring the Isle of Skye, we will return to Inverness for a second night in your accommodation.
Day 3 : Inverness - Edinburgh
Location: Loch Ness, Culloden, Pitlochry, Edinburgh
Meals Included: Breakfast
Our third day begins with a visit to one of Scotland’s the most famous natural landscapes, Loch Ness. It is also one of the largest and deepest in the country, so large that all of the water in every lake and river in England and Wales could fit in with room to spare. In fact, the entire population of the world could fit into Loch Ness, and it’s got a monster in it too! Whilst visiting Loch Ness, you would be able to take a boat cruise on the Loch, giving you the chance to Nessie spot on the loch itself. As well as being very large and deep, Loch Ness, has heavy deposits of peat making it difficult for instruments to locate Nessie in the cloudy water. A perfect hiding location for a huge water-dwelling monster. Our next stop is at Culloden Battlefield, site of the last stand of the Jacobite's against the British government forces on 16 April 1746. This was the final pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobite's. You can experience everything about the events leading up to, during and after the battle in the impressive visitor centre and interactive exhibition, as well as having the chance to wander the land where the battle itself took place. We’ll then continue south to Pitlochry, a picturesque village at the geographical centre of Scotland. Pitlochry has been the gateway to the Highlands since the 1860s thanks to the booming railways of the time, in particular visits from Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott, who popularised the Highlands as a tourist destination. We will then travel on the concluding part of our journey, where we will return to Edinburgh’s city centre, where your tour will end. Those travellers who wish to return to Glasgow will be provided with train tickets to complete their journey.
