This morning go on a half-day tour of the beautiful city of Lisbon. You will discover the famous 7 hills of the city, So Roque, São Jorge, São Vicente, Santo André, Santa Catarina, Chagas and Sant'Ana. Here you will learn about the Lisbon tiles and visit some of the most emblematic points of Lisbon, including many churches and famous landmarks of high heritage value. Next, you will have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to simply relax or explore the city. We suggest you visit the Piriquita Coffee Shop and taste the delicious pastries of “Travesseiros” and “Queijadas” (not included). At night, you will experience dinner with the melancholic vibes of a stirring live Fado show. The Fado is not just a traditional music genre that can be traced to the 1920s, it is also an intangible Heritage of Humanity. Fado, which means fate in Portuguese is connected to the feeling of Saudade, a state of nostalgia and yearning for something or someone. Most lyrics are about broken hearts and lost sailors in the sea. Enjoy your Fado music with dinner.

Today you will be transferred back to Lisbon Humberto Delgado International Airport fto check in for your flight to the island of Madeira, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, just off the west coast of Africa. Funchal is the largest city and capital of the autonomous Portuguese region of Madeira. The city boasts of a high cultural, historical value and incomparable natural beauty. On arrival at Madeira Christiano Ronaldo International Airport you will be met and transferred to the hotel.

After breakfast head out for a half-day tour of Funchal. First, you will visit the market, built in the 1940s where you will experience an explosion of smells, tastes and colors in its various plazas, here you can buy any of Madeiras famous specialties including exotic flowers, local crafts and tropical fruits. Next, you will head to visit the Embroidery Factory, where you will be inspired by the beautiful designs of the famous traditional Madeira embroidery. This art has been alive since the XV century and passed from generation to generation. Later, you will take a cable car (teleferico do Funchal) and visit the most popular Funchal attraction, Monte. From here, you can enjoy the amazing flora of the region and revel in the beautiful views of the city and its surroundings. We suggest you pay a visit to the church of Our Lady of Monte, where you can take a toboggan to sled down the mountain. After you will pay a visit to the Wine Lodge and taste some of Madeiras famous sweet wine. This evening, enjoy a typical Madeira dinner; savour the local dish “Espetada” (beef marinated in herbs, cooked on a large skewer over an open fire) while being entertained by folk dancers.

Day 6: Funchal – Porto Moniz – Funchal (B/L/-)

After breakfast, you will visit the west coast. From Funchal, you will pass through a charming fishing village, Câmara dos Lobos, where you can see colorful fishing boats that stand in contrast to the grey beaches and see some of the highest cliffs in Europe, including the second highest one, Cabo Girão. In Cabo Girão you will be able to walk on the glass-bottomed skywalk and look at the terraced fields and vineyards far below. Later you will head on to Ribeira Brava, a small town with steep valleys on either side. The town is home to the famous church “Igreja de São Bento“, a well-preserved regional monument where you will be able to see valuable paintings dating back to the 16th century. Next, you will go to the Encumeada viewpoint, which offers a superb landscape of the north and south coasts of the island and valleys of the region. Your journey will then take you to São Vicente, a small town known for its volcanic caves as well as its famous church that sits atop a basalt rock at the mouth of the small river that runs through the town. Your next stop will be Porto Moniz, known for its natural swimming pools formed by volcanic lava and naturally filled with crystal-clear sea water. Here you will enjoy a delicious lunch before visiting the Seatown of Calheta. Here you will pay a visit to its famous parish, which dates to 1430 and is well known for its complex and richly decorated Moorish-style wooden knot-work ceiling above the high altar and a large 16th-century ebony and silver tabernacle donated by King Manuel I.

Day 7: Funchal – Santana – Funchal (B/L/-)

After breakfast, you will head up through Camacha, a beautiful village, also known as “the village of basket makers”, the town represents the center of Madeiras willow craft industry, here you can see all the magnificent furniture, hats, ornaments, kitchen utensils produced in the region. Camacha is also well known as the location where football was played for the first time in Portugal. Next, you will continue to Poiso and to Pico do Areeiro, the third largest peak on Madeira Island and one of the most popular spots that offer impressive views of pointy mountains, lush valleys and for lucky visitors a magnificent view of a sea of clouds. After you will make a stop in Ribeiro Frio, a natural park very well known for locals and visitors for its wonderful walks along its natural trails before heading to Faial, a small parish with a rural character, here you will enjoy a delicious Portuguese lunch. After lunch, you will head to Santana, a picturesque village famous for its traditional, brightly colored timber and thatch palheiros houses. These A-frame houses, known as Casas de Santana, have scarlet doors and windows with blue frames and make for a perfect photo-taking opportunity. Next, your journey will take you to brief stops at Porto da Cruz, Portela and Machico before returning to Funchal.
