Tour Overview

Hike on glaciers, cruise through ice fjords and visit small settlements steeped in mythology on this Expedition to Greenland. Tourism in this area consists mostly of polar cruises, but this 10-day adventure takes you through the raw, wild landscapes mostly on foot. You’ll take small boats through ice bergs, learn about local monsters from a local storyteller and go on a hiking trip to a remote eco-lodge on Lyngmark Mountain. Experience the midnight sun (the sun never goes down here in summer!), go on walks and hikes to spectacular viewpoints and maybe even spot a whale or two! With time for optional sea kayaking and whale watching cruises and a local leader by your side every step of the way – this may be the Expedition of a lifetime!

Highlights

  • Spend some time in Greenland’s breathtaking natural landscape on a glacier hike over two full days traversing the wild landscape, spending a night in a remote eco-lodge. Then, take a spectacular ferry ride through ice floes and icebergs (nicknamed the most beautiful boat ride in the world!).

  • Explore Greenland away from the tourist track of polar cruise ships and contribute to the sustainable tourism of a country seldom explored on foot.

  • Experience the midnight sun – this trip will only operate during Greenland’s summer, which means the sun never really sets! Make the most of this eerie phenomenon with optional sea kayaking, boat cruise or sailing adventures.

  • Learn about Greenlandic culture and mythology during a storytelling experience with a local and a kaffemik experience, where you’ll step into a local’s home to learn why coffee and cake is such an important practice.

  • Visit small settlements, seldom explored by curious travellers, and head to Disko Island – ‘like all of Greenland encapsulated in one island’ – to soak up the raw landscape of a land surrounded by ice.

Day 1: Nuuk

Location: Nuuk

Tikilluarit! Welcome to Greenland. Your adventure begins in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, maybe wander the streets of the Old Nuuk neighbourhood and see the Hans Egede Church and Hans Egede statue, both named after the missionary who founded the settlement. History buffs will want to visit the national museum to view the famous Greenlandic mummies, too, which were found under a rock outcrop in 1972 by two brothers who were ptarmigan hunting. After your meeting, maybe head out for an optional welcome dinner with the group.

Included Activities:
-Nuuk - Greenland National Museum & Archives

Optional Activities:
-Nuuk - Puffin watching boat tour
-Nuuk - Nuuk backcountry hiking tour (half day) from
-Nuuk - Nuuk Art Museum

Day 2: Nuuk

Location: Nuuk

Meals Included: breaksfast

This morning, take a leader-led walking tour of Nuuk. After you get your bearings and see some of the city’s sites, you’ll meet with a local storyteller to learn about Greenland’s mythology. Hear stories about the local legends and mythological creatures like the Mother of the Sea, the Mountain Walker, the Sun and Moon and many others. Your storyteller will also talk about their background and where their interest in monsters began. After, you’ll have a free afternoon – maybe take a short hike in the backcountry or take a boat tour through the city’s fjord. As it doesn’t get dark in the evenings, boat tours are a great way to spend an evening!

Included Activities:
-Nuuk - Greenland mythology with a local storyteller
-Nuuk - Leader-led walking tour

Day 3: Nuuk - Ilulissat

Location: Nuuk - Ilulissat

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

This morning, you’ll catch a flight to Ilulissat, which literally translates to ‘iceberg’ and is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ice Fjord. When you arrive, you’ll head out on a leader-led walking tour of the town. Learn about the history of the town, visit the port to learn about the local fishing industry and pass by a wooden church and history museum. Stop in at an artisan workshop to learn about the centuries-old bone carving tradition here and see some local artists at work making jewellery. Later, enjoy a kaffemik experience – step into a local’s home and get a feel for what it's like to live like a Greenlander, especially through the art of kaffemik! More than just coffee and cakes, this tradition of a hot drink and a sweet treat promotes community, connection and the enjoyment of life.

Included Activities:
-Nuuk - Flight to Ilulissat
-Ilulissat - Guided walking tour
-Ilulissat - Bone carving workshop visit
-Ilulissat - Kaffemik experience

Day 4: Ilulissat - Qasigiannguit

Location: Ilulissat - Qasigiannguit

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

Today you’ll head out on a daytrip and cruise to the Qasigiannguit settlement. Ilulissat sits at the mouth of the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier – a source of many of the icebergs in the North Atlantic – so this is the perfect spot for total iceberg exploration. During your tour of the town from the water, look out for seals and whales. Visit Greenland's oldest wooden house, built in 1734, enjoy lunch in a scenic spot and learn about the area’s cultural traditions. Maybe end the day at Hotel Arctic, having a drink in the bar or on the terrace overlooking the large icebergs in Disko Bay.

Included Activities:
-Ilulissat - Full day boat trip to Qasigiannguit settlement including lunch

Day 5: Ilulissat - Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)

Location: Ilulissat - Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)

Meals Included: breaksfast

Today, you’ll take a transfer to the port, then the ferry to Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island). The city and the island have the same name, which in Greenlandic means ‘the big island’. Pass by more icebergs – this may just be one of the most spectacular public ferry rides ever – along the way. When you arrive, take a guided walking tour with your leader to learn about the island’s history and what modern life is like above the polar circle. Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a whaling station and today has about 850 inhabitants. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free – ask your leader where to grab the best local fare.

Included Activities:
-Ilulissat - Ferry to Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)
-Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Guided walking tour

Day 6: Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Lyngmark Glacier

Location: Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Lyngmark Glacier

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner

Today, you’ll take a full day hike from Qeqertarsuaq to Disko Mountain Lodge. The hiking trail may be challenging at times, but the raw scenery is incredibly beautiful and you’ll take several breaks along the way to soak up the volcanic mountain environment and the views over Disko Bay. On a clear day, you’ll see all the way to Ilulissat! Have lunch along the way, then end at your accommodation at Disko Mountain Lodge – a blue wooden cabin on top of Lyngmark Mountain. Cosy and comfortable despite its remote location, this lodge features panoramic views over the bay and the perfect opportunity to soak in the wilderness of your surroundings. Depending on the weather and the conditions on the glacier, your leader will organise some optional activities for this afternoon – maybe go hiking to Blaesedalen (windy valley) or the Apostle Mountain, hike on the glacier with snowshoes or hang out at the lodge playing games.

Included Activities:
-Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Hike to Lyngmark Glacier

Day 7: Lyngmark Glacier - Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)

Location: Lyngmark Glacier - Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island)

Meals Included: breaksfast

Today, fuel up on breakfast, then hike back to Qeqertarsuaq the same way you came. Disko Island is raw and wild, and its volcanic heritage has created a unique environment, unlike any other place in Greenland. Explore the basalt rock formations, lush vegetation, hot springs and black sand beaches along the way, soaking up the unique natural wonders and the immensity of the Lyngmark Glacier.

Included Activities:
-Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Hike from Lyngmark Glacier to Qeqertarsuaq

Optional Activities:
-Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Siorasuit Black Sand Beach ice swimming & sauna

Day 8: Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Ilulissat

Location: Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Ilulissat

Meals Included: breaksfast

This morning, take the ferry back to Ilulissat. When you arrive, enjoy a free afternoon to relax and recharge after a full two days of hiking. You could also take an optional sea-kayaking tour through the icebergs or go whale watching! You could also head out on an iIce fjord boat tour and cruise through the incredible landscape at a leisurely pace. During the months of the midnight sun (when the sun never completely sets), there is plenty to do to really soak up the magic of this remote location!

Included Activities:
-Qeqertarsuaq (Disko Island) - Ferry to Ilusissat

Optional Activities:
-Ilulissat - Icefjord Cruise
-Ilulissat - Midnight Sun sailing
-Ilussisat - Evening kayaking among icebergs
-Ilulissat - Whale watching tour

Day 9: Ilulissat

Location: Ilulissat

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

Visit the Icefjord Centre today for a journey into Greenlandic culture. Here, visit the permanent exhibition ‘Sermeq pillugu Oqaluttuaq – The Story of the Ice,’ and learn about the cycle of the ice and the abundant wildlife around the fjord. Head to the rooftop for a good view of the city, then take a walk along the wooden pathway to the fjord, to visit the Sermermiut settlement. This valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the ruins of ancient settlements that date back 4500 years. See another view of the icebergs from a viewpoint, then you’ll reach the shore of the ice fjord. Continue to Nakkaavik, which means ‘the place where you fall’. This name comes from a time when the elderly use to throw themselves down the cliff during famine – they sacrificed their lives for the younger people, so they could have enough food to continue and feed the new generations. Tonight, you’re free to take on any optional activities you didn’t get a chance to do yesterday. Or, head out for dinner with your group and celebrate an incredible adventure!

Included Activities:
-Ilulissat - Icefjord Centre entrance ticket
-Ilulissat - Icefjord hike to Sermermiut settlement

Day 10: Ilulissat

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

North American Adventure

12-Oct-2021

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

I have just completed a 12 day food tour of Vietnam, and had an amazing time. Our tour leader was great, knowledgeable and kind, who helped throughout the trip with recommendations for places on our free days, and spas. All the food we tried was delicious. It is a very fast paced tour, and Bon tried to maximise our experiences for the best.

13-Aug-2024

We had a fantastic time on the Botswana Highlights tour recently. We chose Intrepid because it seemed to suit what we wanted - well planned itinerary, small group, comfortable without being overly luxurious (and pricey), and supportive of the local community and environment. We weren't disappointed, and as we met with other like-minded travellers then we all had a great time. We are already planning our next Intrepid tour - maybe Vietnam & Cambodia :-)
