Did you know that you can actually stay in Peru’s Amazon Jungle? The giant jungle – which spans 8 countries and is home to more than 2 million Indigenous people – is the perfect place to explore, with a lodge to return home to every day. Walk through the rainforest, cruise along waterways, spot wildlife you’ve never seen before and learn about the healing properties of native plants. This short break is a great way to get to know the friendly people and the amazing creatures that call the Amazon home. ...more ...less

Hola! Welcome to Peru. A lodge representative will welcome you at the airport, so please make sure you arrive in Puerto Maldonado by 1 pm. Then, head to the Amazon lodge office, where you’ll safely store most of your luggage for the duration of your Short Break. Pack everything you need for your two days in the jungle in a small bag provided and hit the road again. To reach your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area, journey in a motorised canoe upriver. When you arrive, unwind in your new jungle surroundings.

Day 2: Amazon Lodge

Location: Amazon Lodge

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Start your day by exploring the Amazon by boat and foot. You’ll arrive at an oxbow lake in the middle of the rainforest – the habitat of a family of giant otters. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of jungle fauna along the way, like hoatzins, monkeys, macaws, black caimans, flying parrots and, if you’re lucky, a family of endangered giant river otters (pteronoura brasilienses). Then, head to the parrot clay lick where birds flock to feed on the salty clay. The macaws begin by ceremoniously circling the cliff area and the feeding frenzy usually lasts 20 to 25 minutes. The salt from the clay is thought to detoxify the birds’ fruit diet. After, enjoy lunch back at the lodge before heading back out to the jungle to learn about the medicinal properties of the plants. Return to the lodge once again to freshen up before dinner. If you want to see the Amazon jungle at night, you can join an optional night walk later in the evening.

Day 3: Amazon Lodge

Location: Amazon Lodge

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Get up close to mammals during their morning feeding time. Unlike birds, these timid creatures follow no set schedule and feed day or night, making them harder to observe in the wild. Watch for white-lipped peccaries and collared peccaries, deer, agouti, squirrels and tapir at this feeding station. For your own food, head back to the lodge. Then, visit the lodge’s medicinal garden or a local family farm that has developed traditional and sustainable agricultural methods over the years. Here, you’ll identify plant species that are typical of the region. Enjoy a final dinner back at the lodge tonight.

Day 4: Puerto Maldonado

Location: Puerto Maldonado

Meals Included: Breakfast

Depart the lodge this morning after an early breakfast. You’ll be taken from the port to the airport, at which point your trip comes to an end. Departure flights for today should be booked for after 11.30 am.

Accommodation

  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
  • Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.

Important Information

  • 1. This Short Break Adventure is a ‘join in’ group departure, which means you are not accompanied by an Intrepid group leader – our local representative fills this role – and the configuration of any fellow travelers in the group might change during the trip. This trip will run with a minimum of one person, so you may be joined by other travelers booked on the same date as you, or you may be on your own. This is a join in trip where you will be joined by other like minded travelers on transfers, at the jungle lodge and during jungle activities.
  • 2. You must arrive to Puerto Maldonado by 1pm on day 1 of the trip. As you will be picked from the airport by a lodge representative, it is imperative that you inform us your arrival flight details into Puerto Maldonado at least 15 days prior to the start of the trip. Please note the complimentary transfer can only be used on the start day of this trip.
  • 3. On the final day you will take a morning motorized canoe back to Puerto Maldanado port and a transfer to the airport. Please do not book any flights prior to 11:45am
  • 4. Please provide your full name exactly as per passport at the time of booking (including any middle names listed on your passport). Fees may apply for amendments to details within 45 days of departure. Delays to provide this information may result in third party booking fees.
  • 5. Age restrictions apply to this trip - minimum age 5.

Mode of Transport

Check out our Q&As

  • Is this trip right for you

On Short Breaks, you maintain a good level of independence and freedom, with the added bonus of having the details sorted out for you. You’ll have lots of free time and you won’t be accompanied by a Trip Leader. This means that all included activities and tours will be run by different local Intrepid partners, and these may operate independently from each other. The included activities and transfers will operate on a join-in basis, which means that you could have your Adventure all to yourself, or others may join you along the way. If you would prefer to travel in a group with a dedicated Trip Leader, just get in touch with your booking agent and they will take you through some alternatives.

Rooms at the lodges are simple but comfortable, and there are flushing toilets, showers, mosquito nets and kerosene lamps. However, there is no electricity in the rooms. Electricity will only be available in the common areas, and likely at a designated time, not all day. Lodge staff are primarily local, including the multilingual guides who can teach you all about the area's rich flora and fauna.

As we offer daily departures of this trip, we may need to use an alternative lodge occasionally. In this case, you’ll be advised prior to travel. Alternative lodge details can be found in the 'Accommodation' section of the Essential Trip Information.

The Amazon Jungle can be very hot and humid, so it's important to drink plenty of water and wear light cotton clothing. Make sure you also bring tropical-strength insect repellent.

This trip includes a full day's walk in the jungle. Even though the paths are well defined, this still requires a reasonable level of fitness, and sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots are essential.

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍 ...more ...less

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon! ...more ...less

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic. ...more ...less

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong ...more ...less

15-Mar-2024

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X ...more ...less

North American Adventure

12-Oct-2021

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure! ...more ...less
