Tour Overview

The city of Galle holds significant historical importance in Sri Lanka, especially in the context of international relationships during ancient times. Various foreign traders, including Arabs, Chinese, and Greeks, frequented the area for trade. Galle even found a place on Ptolemy's world map, created between 125-150 AD. Presently, Galle is renowned worldwide for the Galle Dutch Fort, standing proudly along the Indian Ocean, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dutch Ceylon, spanning from 1640 to 1796, marked a period where the Dutch East India Company supplanted Portuguese influence in what is now Sri Lanka. The Dutch's primary objective was to dominate the spice trade, particularly in cinnamon, leading to the construction of forts such as those in Galle and Colombo. The Treaty of Batticaloa (1638) granted the Dutch trading rights and permission for fortifications. Over time, Dutch influence dwindled, and in 1796, the British assumed control following the Treaty of Amiens, ultimately concluding the era of Dutch Ceylon. The Dutch legacy endures through Sri Lanka's forts and the Dutch Burgher community.

Although the Dutch managed to capture most of the coastal areas in Sri Lanka, they were never able to control the Kandyan Kingdom located in the interior of the island.] Dutch Ceylon existed from 1640 until 1796. In the early 17th century, Sri Lanka was partly ruled by the Portuguese and Sri Lankan kingdoms, who were constantly battling each other. Although the Portuguese were not winning the war, their rule was rather burdensome to the people of those areas controlled by them. While the Dutch were engaged in a long war of independence from Spanish rule, the Sinhalese king (the king of Kandy) invited the Dutch to help defeat the Portuguese. The Dutch interest in Ceylon was to have a united battle front against the Iberians at that time. Dutch flag entering the name of the VOC & three colors, red, white, Blue they are used By Dutch flag. It is right at the corner of the fort with unlimited sea views. It is the most crowded spot of the fort because of its positions and as we mention for photo shooting. We were unable to see the inside of the lighthouse, but it is interesting to see the outside and to understand its importance to the keeping the fortifications safe.

Exploring the expansive fort in Galle offers a rich tapestry of historical insights and breathtaking views against the backdrop of the vast ocean. With its sprawling layout, visitors have the option to leisurely stroll through its labyrinthine streets or opt for the convenience of a driver to navigate the various points of interest. As you traverse the cobblestone pathways, you'll be transported back in time to an era of colonial domination, marked by the presence of Portuguese and Dutch influences etched into the architecture and cultural fabric of the fort. Amidst the picturesque scenery, it's essential to be mindful of the tropical sun, whose rays can be intense throughout the day. To ensure a comfortable and safe exploration, don't forget to arm yourself with adequate sun protection, including hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
