But the real treasure of the church is hidden behind its walls. The 240 masterpiece frescoes, dating back to 1259, depict Biblical figures as well as Bulgarian royalty. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo, a capital of medieval Bulgarian rulers, in a beautiful forest setting along the Yantra River. Visit the stunning Tsarevets Fortress, citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire and then enjoy the labyrinth of small cobblestoned streets of the old town, visiting local workshops, galleries and atmospheric squares.

After breakfast, head to Ivanovo Rock Monastery (110km, 1h 30mins). This UNESCO World Heritage monastery is built inside a cave that is16m long, 4m wide and 38m above ground. It’s about a 10mins walk on a good trail through a forest to get there. Built during the 13th century by Tsars Ivan Asen II and Ivan Aleksandar, the monastery soon became a regional centre of art, culture and religion. The 14th century murals on the walls and ceilings are regarded as some of the finest in Bulgaria and depict various saints and impassioned scenes from the Last Supper. After the visit, you can continue for a walk and lunch to Ruse, one of Bulgaria’s most elegant cities (28km; 32mins). Then you continue to the Thracian tomb of Sveshtari. This incredible chamber is built of large limestone blocks and is the most well-preserved Thracian treasure in the country. Inside the burial site, historians found the body of a man, likely a Thracian ruler of the Getae tribe and his wife. The domed ceiling of the burial chamber is supported by 10 statues of women with raised hands, which is believed to be a portrayal of a ritual dance.

Continue to the next UNESCO site, the Madara Rider rock carving, near the city of Shumen. This impressive image has been carved into a 100m high cliff and depicts the image of a horseman with a spear, a wounded lion, fallen at the feet of the horse, and a hunting dog. Day 5 : Nessebar

Location: Nessebar

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel St. Stefan or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast

Spend the day in the UNESCO Ancient City of Nessebar site. Although nowadays it is a popular holiday spot, the remains of the city date back 3,200 years when it was inhabited by Thracians. Later, the town became a Greek colony and significantly expanded its size. The town also served the Roman Empire and became an important trade town under the name Mesembria. Bulgarians settled in the city in 812 and gave it the name it carries to this day – Nessebar. In the old town of Nessebar, you will find 23 cultural sites and monuments, including the remains of the town’s defensive wall and the ancient churches of Christ Pantocrator and St Sofia. You will also pass by many houses and buildings built between the 18th and 19th centuries in the architectural style of the Revival period.

Day 6 : Nessebar – Thracian Tomb Of Kazanlak – Plovdiv

Location: Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, Nessebar, Plovdiv

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Hill House or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today you are heading to the Valley of the Thracian Rulers, so called because of the many Thracian monuments in the valley of Kazanlak. This includes the Thracian tomb of Kazanlak, dating back to the Hellenistic period. Hidden underneath a grassy mound, this burial site unearthed the remains of a man and woman, along with the skeleton of a horse. It is believed that the pair were of important, possibly royal members of the Thracian tribe. The original tomb is now sealed and protected in order to preserve the delicate and dated pictorial murals. However, an exact copy of the tomb was built nearby and is now available for visits. You will then continue to Plovdiv, otherwise known as the city of seven hills. Enjoy strolling around the cobblestone streets, admire ancient buildings, or grab a drink at one of the cozy cafes in the Kapana creative district.

Driving: 323km, 4h 10 min

Day 7 : Plovdiv – Bansko

Location: Plovdiv, Bansko

Accommodation: Hotel

Accommodation Name: Hotel Rahoff or similar

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today you cross the Rhodope Mountains to arrive in Bansko, located in the foothills of Pirin National Park. As Bulgaria’s leading ski resort, it’s bustling during the ski season. However in the summer, it is much quieter and you can enjoy a leisurely walk through cobblestone old town’s streets passing by 19th century National Revival mansions and museums. After a short 35mins (17km) drive from the town you will reach Vihren Hut. From here you can do a circular hike around Banderitsa Lakes. On the way back you can make a short stop to see Baykusheva Mura, the oldest pine tree in Bulgaria at1,300 years old.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today you continue towards the serene Rila river valley and visit one of the symbols of Bulgaria – the ornate Rila Monastery. It was founded in the 10th century by a monk-hermit St John of Rila and has been the guardian of the Christian faith and Bulgarian education and culture during the five centuries of Ottoman rule. The Rila Monastery is the most important spiritual and literary centre of the Bulgarian National Revival, with an uninterrupted history until present times. Within the monastery’s walls, four levels of colourful balconies surround the large courtyard, where stands the magnificent Church of the Nativity, Bulgaria’s grandest monastery church, built between 1834 and 1837. Its outside walls are covered with vivid and detailed frescoes, created by one of the most prominent Bulgarian artists at the time. At the museum, you can see ancient items of the church, like scepters, old manuscripts, and printed books as well as the Rila cross – a double-sided crucifix carved showing 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures, carved out of a whole piece of wood. After admiring the monastery and its surrounding hills you continue to Sofia, where you can explore the vibrant life and the cultural sites of the capital.

Walking Fishermens trail in western Portugal will be a memory for life. We loved every minute of our week. All arrangements worked perfectly, from accommodation to luggage transport to questions we had before setting off. Our local agent met with us before we started the walk and we felt very reassured by his local knowledge and support. All accommodation was different, local, clean, friendly and easy to find. Very good value for money. I can really recommend Natural Adventure company and we will be back for more adventures. Many thanks Kicki Neely and friends

25-Jan-2024

A friend and I did the Alps to the Riviera walk in France at the end of 2021 and it was the best holiday experience either of us has ever had. It’s an amazing way of immersing oneself in the countryside and getting the full flavour of the country away from the tourist attractions. The Natural Adventure Company made perfect arrangements for us, gave us clear directions and was just a call away, to sort out any issues. The walk gave us incredible memories that will enrich us for a lifetime. I am in the process of booking my next wonderful adventure and I can’t wait to get started!

26-Jul-2024

I recently hiked, with a friend in the Italian Alps (the Val D'Aosta) and can highly recommend the region, and the Natural Adventure company. We were very pleased with the accommodation and the food was excellent most of the time- generous portions of excellent local dishes. The resources we were sent were excellent and very thorough. It was very easy to follow the routes as we were given so much detail- which we printed out and took each day's instructions with us, and the App helped to keep us on track. Sadly, we couldn't stay at the last location because there was a storm one night and the village we were due to stay in was flooded and cut off. The Natural Adventure did all they could to support us immediately, and help us find an alternative and we ended up staying where we were, as we were so pleased with that hotel and knew we could continue our hikes from there. We were very pleased with the holiday, the walks, the info and all our dealings with them. I would highly recommend them

15-Jul-2024

We booked our self-guided Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trip in Japan with The Natural Adventure (known locally as Oku Japan). The experience was top notch from beginning to end. The information packet was thorough and helpful, and details regarding trains and local buses (timetables, pricing, etc) were consistently accurate. Each and every accommodation was unique, charming, and welcoming. When there was an issue checking into our final hotel, the local office was quick to respond and the problem was solved within the hour (it was also a Sunday, so extra points). We weren’t expecting this to be a gourmet food tour of the region, but it was that as well! On top of it all, we found the price very reasonable for everything that is included. We had a wonderful experience thanks to The Natural Adventure, and would certainly travel with them again.

26-Feb-2024

I have been working with The Natural Adventure for a few years now and it's been a flawless experience. I have now booked 4 different trips (4th to happen in April 2023). Accomodations have been great and local operators (bikes, hiking guides and boats) have all been great. The rates are very fair and trip selections are great. Hoping to see some boat bike options in Greece and Turkey!

Great communications, customized trip

20-Aug-2022

This is our first time using Natural Adventure to plan a hiking trip in Europe. I wanted an 8-day hike to start on a certain date to explore a northern region of Portugal. They were so accommodating - customized our trip to meet our needs with responsive communications and full itinerary; everything has been taken care of. We look forward to the trip!!

We hiked the Kerry Way with Natural Adventure and it was terrific. Outstanding views and good Irish weather. Some days were longer than expected due to placement of Bed and Breakfasts. Hosts were warm and helpful even dried our gear and shared local secrets. Irish hospitality in high gear.

14-Sep-2023

My wife and I booked the Lechweg short break hike with the natural adventure company this Fall and we’re very happy with our experience. I noticed one of the reviews questioning what they (natural adventure co) provide. That’s a fair question and from my perspective as a USA citizen, they provided a very important liaison/conduit role into the EU that would be prohibitive or downright impossible for a non EU citizen hiking/biking in Europe. In addition, I have found that in dealing directly with a few European companies directly, information does not always flow as smoothly as we like. The natural adventure company’s communication style fit our liking perfectly in that we receive a fast and thorough response with every question. They are prompt and helpful. They did subcontract with another company for boots on the ground support but the hotel reservations and itinerary were in house. We would definitely use the natural adventure company again no question.

30-Jul-2024

Really poor experience with my recent Tour Du Mont Blanc trip. Our company contact Pierre was so unprofessional and did not care about the safety of travelers. On the second day he left to do a hike and we didn’t hear back until multiple days later. I experienced multiple travel delays which meant the loss of the prepaid travel arrangements and their solution was a 250 euro taxi to the hotel. Do not recommend.
