You’ll get the chance to see the beautiful Western Iceland. There, you’ll explore the hidden gem of the West, the peninsula of Snæfellsnes also known as “Iceland in a nutshell” it is characterized by magnificent and picturesque sites: glacial-carved mountains, endless black beaches, moss topped lava fields, volcanic craters, coastal cliffs topped off by the volcanic glacier Snæfellsjokull and the Center of the Earth.Day 1: You will be picked up from Reykjavík, between 8am and 8.30. After pick up is completed, off we go for our adventure! After pick up, you will head right away to Iceland’s most famous route: The Golden Circle. You’ll get the chance to experience everything that the area has to offer, including geothermal areas, waterfalls, and our favorite locals.Thingvellir National Park: visit the place where the two tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian plate, are moving away from each other. Few places in the world offer a better and clearer view of this massive geographic activity. Not only is this vast park beautiful to look at, but it is also remarkable geographically, as the ridge that runs through it is comprised of two exposed tectonic plates: the Eurasian and North American plates pull apart here, giving you the unique opportunity to walk between continents. The biggest natural lake in Iceland is also located at Thingvellir National Park and hosts a great variety of fish and bird life. Thingvellir is also an important place for Icelandic national history. At Thingvellir Icelanders founded their parliament in 930 a.d. where the chieftains had their annual meeting every summer. The name “Thingvellir” translates to “Parliament Plains”.The Geysir geothermal area: it hosts hundreds of colorful hot springs and two geysers hot springs: one is dormant and it's called “Geysir”, that named all the geysers in the world after its name; the other one is called “Strokkur”, which erupts every 5 minutes up to 40 meters.Gullfoss Waterfall: the melting water from Iceland´s second biggest glacier, Langjokull, falls into a deep canyon forming the majestic “Golden Falls”. On a sunny day, you can see the glacier Langjokull in the distance and enjoy a rainbow in the mist of the waterfall, an Instagram blockbuster waiting to happen!Day 2: On the second day you will head towards the South Coast.Seljalandsfoss: the adventure begins with the powerful theatrics of Seljalandsfoss. Bring a raincoat and you’ll be able to make the short hike behind the falls. The scene behind the fall and the trembling ground from the power of the falling water makes for an automatic Instagram blockbuster!Skógafoss waterfall: further east along the coast is Skógafoss waterfall. Skógafoss is an incredibly picturesque sight. Tucked in a little gorge, the river Skógá tumbles down a 60 meter cliff before continuing down the landscape towards the Atlantic Ocean. Alongside the gorge a staircase can take you to the shelf above the waterfall for stunning views. See if you can count your steps on your way up.Glacier Hike: We will hike an outlet glacier spawning from one of the largest glaciers in the country. After meeting our highly trained glacier guides and strapping on our safety and glacier equipment, including helmets, harnesses, crampons and ice axes we hike on the ice for an hour and a half. A spectacular experience and opportunity to learn more about this breathtaking and increasingly rare natural phenomena.Day 3: Boat ride in The Glacier LagoonJokulsárlón: the Glacier Lagoon is a 200m deep glacial lagoon fed by Breiðamerkurjokull, an outlet glacier of Europe’s largest glacier. Enormous icebergs come from Breiðamerkurjokull all year round so the lagoon is usually filled with ice that floats south. We will bring you on a boat ride (inclided in the price) among the icebergs to explore the lake and maybe spot some seals, sunbathing on the icechunks. Try walking alongside the glacier lagoon enjoying the magnificent views and dead silence of Icelandic nature. The Diamond Beach: on the other side of the road the icebergs from Jokulsárlón glacier lagoon float into the Atlantic Ocean where they are quickly thrown back to shore by the tide and winds. This black sand beach is full of smaller ice rocks in all shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in the daylight. The ice itself comes in all shades of white and blue forming beautiful contrasts, guaranteed to make your Instagram account pop!Reynisfjara, the Black Sand Beach: later, we visit the black sand beach of Reynisfjara where the Atlantic coastline presents massive waves hitting the unique basalt columns in the cliffs above the sand. Rock pillars in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey are seen in the distance. This area of the south is also a paradise for bird lovers, as puffins and dozens of other unique species nest on top of these cliffs in the summertime from June to August.Day 4: Snæfelsness peninsulaBorgarnesYtri Tunga Beach: Seal ColonyBúðirArnarstapi: Fishing VillageDjúpalónssandurLóndrangar Basalt CliffsKirkjufellOur adventure is now over, and we will start heading back towards Reykjavik. We should arrive back in the capital city at around 19.00, depending on traffic and roads.

Day 1 : The Black Church Of Búðir

Location: Búðir

Accommodation: Hotel

On the morning of the tour, we will start our adventure at 8am in Reykjavík. Once everyone boards the minibus, we will start our adventure towards Snæfellsnes, a beautiful volcanic area, in the west of Iceland.

YTRI TUNGA BEACH AND SEAL COLONY

Ytri-Tunga is a sandy beach that has a little secret hidden away down by the sea, behind the farmhouses… a seal colony! Seals love to spend their time on the rocks of this beautiful beach. They are friendly and curious and will climb up on the rocks for you to spot them from a distance.

BÚDAKIRKJA: THE BLACK CHURCH OF BÚDIR

On the south coast of the peninsula, there’s a village with only a hotel and a tiny black church called the Búðakirkja that sits alone among a field of lava rocks. Búdakirkja was built on the spot in 1703 and reconstructed in 1987 after a claim by a single member that lobbied to have it back. It has a historic graveyard, a bell and chalice from the time it was erected. It is a listed building, owned by the National Museum of Iceland, but it is in the care of the Búdir parish. Without a doubt, this picturesque chapel has a romantic air about it and is a real attraction to the site.

ARNARSTAPI FISHING VILLAGE

This tiny fishing village has picturesque coastal cliffs which derived from glowing magma hitting the wild waves of the Atlantic. Known in Iceland as the most beautiful harbor of the country. Thousands of years later erosion has formed beautiful stone arcs and a remarkable marine geyser. Enjoy a walk along the coastline while your guide tells you all about Bárður, half-man half-troll, and his misdeeds in the area.

LÓNDRANGAR AND BASALT CLIFFS

The Lóndrangar are a pair of rock pinnacles in Iceland and are remnants from a bigger crater which has mostly eroded away. Looming over the entire southern coastline, Lóndrangar, a set of 75-meter high basalt pinnacles set the tone for what’s to come. They host a variety of seabirds, northern fulmars and puffins, and others.

DJÚPALÓNSSANDUR

A beach of black volcanic sand and stones where for centuries Icelandic fishermen rowed out to the fertile fishing grounds of the Atlantic ocean. Still today we find the so-called “lifting stones” which fishermen of yore used to test out their strength and prove themselves worthy of the physically straining life of Atlantic rowboat fishing. You can try to lift them yourself! In 1948 a British fishing trawler stranded on the sand reefs of Djúpalónssandur. Five men perished while 14 were rescued by local rescue squads. The remains of the ship are still there, strewn across the beach as an eerie reminder of the awesome power of nature.

“THE CHURCH MOUNTAIN” KIRKJUFELL AND KIRKJUFELLSFOSS WATERFALL

This iconic narrow mountain has become the landmark of Snæfellsnes in recent years. It became famous after being presented as the “Arrowhead Mountain” on Game of Thrones. The erosive powers of the glaciers during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago gave this mountain its shape. Due to this unique look, it is one of the most photographed sights in Iceland and just across you will see the beautiful waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss which completes your perfect shot of the mountain. There are numerous vantage points for the perfect photograph.

Day 2 : The Coastal Town Of Vík

Location: Vík

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

On our second day, we will drive a little to the East to explore the most visited route in Iceland - the Golden Circle.

GEYSIR GEOTHERMAL AREA

The Geysir geothermal area hosts many colorful hot springs. One called Strokkur is a geyser, which erupts every 5 minutes up to 35 meters. It was named after “Geysir” the original erupting hot spring, that gave all the geysers in the world their name, however extinct today.

GULLFOSS WATERFALL

The melting water from Iceland's second biggest glacier, Langjökull, falls into a deep canyon forming the majestic “Golden Falls”. On a sunny day, you can see the glacier Langjökull in the distance and enjoy a rainbow in the mist of the waterfall, a photo blockbuster waiting to happen!

THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK

We visit the place where the two tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian plate, are moving away from each other. Few places in the world offer a better and clearer view of this massive geographic activity. The biggest natural lake in Iceland is also located at Thingvellir National Park and hosts a great variety of fish and bird life. Thingvellir is also an important place for Icelandic national history. as Icelanders founded here their parliament in 930 AD where the chieftains had their annual meeting every summer. The name “Thingvellir” translates to “Parliament Plains”.

Day 3 : The Diamond Beach

Location: Höfn í Hornafirði

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Get ready, we are going to Iceland's second most famous route - South Coast. In the south of Iceland expect to find loads of waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers!

SELJALANDSFOSS WATERFALL

Upon arrival you will enjoy the powerful theatrics of Seljalandsfoss. Bring a raincoat and you’ll be able to make the short hike behind the falls. The scene behind the fall and the trembling ground from the power of the falling water makes for an automatic photo blockbuster!

SKÓGAFOSS WATERFALL

Further east along the coast is Skógafoss waterfall. Skógafoss is an incredibly picturesque sight: tucked in a little gorge, the river Skógá tumbles down a 60 meters cliff before continuing down the landscape towards the Atlantic Ocean. Alongside the gorge, a staircase can take you to the shelf above the waterfall for stunning views.

GLACIER HIKE IN SKAFTAFELL

We will hike an outlet glacier spawning from the largest glacier in the country, Vatnajökull. A spectacular experience and opportunity to learn more about this breathtaking natural phenomenon. Skaftafell area has been used as a filming location for many famous TV shows and films, such as Game of Thrones.

*depending on weather, conditions and availability, we might visit Sólheimajökull Glacier instead.

Day 4 : Diamond Beach And Return To Reykjavik

Location: Diamond Beach, Reykjavík

Accommodation: Hotel

Last day

Afterwards we will take you on an unforgettable Boat Ride Tour at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you will get a chance to get closer to the floating icebergs!

Check out our Q&As

  • How cold is Iceland?

Summer temperatures are around 15°C with the north and east often being the warmest parts in the summer but coldest in winter. Average January temperatures in Reykjavík, at around zero, are actually higher than those in New York.

  • How difficult are glacier hikes?

We offer glacier hiking tours in Skaftafell and one in Sólheimajökull. Both locations either easy or moderate in difficulty. Our tours are considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. If you are fit to walk for about an hour on an uneven surface a glacier hike is for you. Longer tours will be more challenging in endurance and some areas of the glacier. We also recommend you remember that we offer all the safety equipment necessary and you will be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide. If you have specific questions regarding one of our glacier tours, feel free to contact us.

  • Iceland in the summer or in the winter?

Each season has its charm Iceland in the winter has the northern lights, the coziness of being at home, knitting and eating winter food. Iceland in the summer has the midnight sun, the friendliness of the outdoors and summer food! We love this land, any time of the year!

  • What kind of money is used in Iceland?

All major credit card are accepted. We use the Icelandic króna (ISK). All major currencies can be exchanged at the airport and banks. You can also find ATMs all over the country. Apple Pay works in most stores.

  • Do Icelanders speak English?

Most Icelanders speak English fluently. In fact, they welcome the opportunity. So, don’t be shy about approaching an Icelander.

  • What is the luggage limit on multi-day tours?

On tours, you can take one bag with you (max 24 inch). You can also take a backpack to keep inside the bus. 2 passengers traveling together can take 1 larger bag together instead of 2 smaller bags. If you purchase extra luggage, then we will store the extra luggage in our office. If there is room on the bus then the luggage can go with you if you pay the extra luggage fee - but we can't guarantee that.

  • What is the standard tip for tour guides in Iceland?

Tourism in Iceland is young and there is no custom for donating tips nor is it mandatory or expected but greatly appreciated if you wish to show your appreciation in that way.

  • What should I bring with me?

The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. To enjoy the tours, it is essential to bring warm clothes with a waterproof layer. Beanie, gloves, and shoes with ankle support. For tours during winter: warm clothing as the first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat, and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when wet. • Warm clothes (first layer) • Waterproof outdoor clothing (second layer) (available for rent when booking) • Hiking boots (available for rent when booking) • Swimsuit and a towel • Joy and happiness!

  • Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

No. A single fee supplement is mandatory for solo travelers on all multiday tours to ensure your private room in our accommodation. There is no way to opt-out of a single-fee supplement if you are a solo traveler. If you are travelling with a friend, you can join them in a room and no fee would be payable.

17-Mar-2024

I did the South Coast and Glacier hike with Gylif. He drove all of us to the different locations and told us fascinating things about volcanoes, the land, and energy generation. It was a very enjoyable educational experience. The waterfalls were all beautiful, and I drank the most amazing water. When we finally got to the glacier to hike on top of, he made sure we all safely put on our equipment and gave us a lot of different safety tips about hiking. I'm very prone to falling in general, but I did not fall down once and some of the things he told us are things I can apply to other walking activities. I would love to do the other expeditions and look forward to it!

24-Feb-2024

My 12 year old daughter and I did a 3 day tour of Southern Iceland in Feb 2024 and it was superb. Our guide (Elisa) was fantastic - knowledgeable and lovely. We learned so much from her about Icelandic culture and history as we drove around the rugged landscape. We saw so many fabulous places on our trip - the tour is EXCELLENT value for money. It covers the minibus costs, entry to places and activities and 2 nights in a hotel (incl. breakfast). It was a long time in the bus but when you're looking out of the window at the ever changing landscape it didn't feel so long. Around each bend the view is completely different. Absolutely loved the tour and would gladly go with Troll on a future tour.

did a wonderful day tour of the golden triangle and I must say it was a most wonderful day. Before I booked the service I got from customer services was brilliant and all my queries were professionally answered. Unfortunately, due to bad weather our cruise ship was delayed by 2 days but i had no problem changing the booking. The courier on the day was fantastic and informative. Nothing seemed to much trouble to him. 👍👍 to Troll Expeditions

I really enjoyed the 3-day South Coast and Golden circle tour. The views were phenomenal and our guide Oihane was nice and introduced many nice facts about the landscapes. She even went above and beyond to take us to some secret scenes not on the list. The glacier hike and blue ice cave tour was just amazing!

My partner and I did the snorkelling exploration through silfra with Kevin. It was amazing! Highlight of the trip for sure. Kevin is a fantastic host who took great pictures, was funny and entertaining whilst making us feel completely safe throughout! Their van is heated for you to change in which is very welcomed as when we did it the weather was -5 and snowing! Will recommend to all friends who plan on travelling to Iceland in the future. 10/10

It has been a spectacular trip, impossible to describe in words everything lived, eaten and experienced. Our guide, Jon, was key in this trip to get to know the best of Iceland. He took us to incredible places, told us stories, was concerned with answering all our questions, always attentive to what the group needed. Iceland is a spectacular country!

Excellent tour! Siggy was a fantastic guide and the itinerary was robust. (Bummed we didn’t get to see the Northern Lights but that wasn’t their fault). The accommodations were mixed - second night was fantastic: nice room, yummy home cooked food. The first night hotel was less memorable but clean and safe. I would definitely recommend !
