You can stop for lunch at a restaurant on the beach. In the afternoon, visit the lovely botanical gardens in Cap Roig or venture further south through the valley of Aubi, with its well-preserved rural atmosphere. Some local farmhouses still have towers dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, where villagers once sought refuge against pirate attacks. Overnight in Peratallada.

Just outside the town you pass a beautiful Augustine monastery before following the Muga River to the Medieval town of Castello d’Empuries. In the afternoon, you cycle through Aiguamolls de l’Emporda Natural Park, green and refreshing wetlands with an impressive seasonal water bird colony. Overnight in Sant Pere Pescador.
Ascent/descent: 125m/410ft
There is a shorter (37km/23mi), more challenging option, cycling through typical villages of the Alt Empordà. From approx 10km the route becomes more demanding, with some steep sections in the area around the River Fluvià. Ascent/descent: 225m/739ft

E biking in Catalonia recently was awesome. We had no idea what to expect regarding scenery but we’re impressed with our accommodation, the medieval towns, the friendliness of the people and the crops in the fields

My husband is the keen bike rider and I go along for the ride, and very pleased I did. It was a very manageable ride through back streets and off road tracks. Riding through the medieval towns was amazing, love the narrow lanes. The app to guide our route worked so well and was easy to follow.

We had a fantastic ride - everything was so well organized, the accommodation and hosts friendly and helpful, the bikes were excellent. The Active Nav app was brilliant so easy to follow. We had fun exploring the region - medieval villages, farmlands, coastal villages, etc.

Empordá is a beautiful area to cycle in and not too challenging in terms of most of the terrain we covered. The towns are all old, with narrow streets hedged by old stone buildings, the air often scented with night blooming Jasmine, graced with ever present birdsong and peopled by courteous and gracious folks to help make your time even more enjoyable. Also terrific to be able to take in some amazing beaches with water swimmable (bit polar bearish in May). We enjoyed most of the food we had. Would encourage those particularly not interested in challenging routes to think seriously about this area.
