MODERATE TO CHALLENGING – GRADE 4
The cycling is moderate to challenging (4) with daily cycling distances from 26 to 54 km / 16 to 33.5mi over diverse terrain – from relatively flat to hilly and at times there are steep slopes. There will be some dirt roads as well as the occasional rocky path used during this tour. Parts of the Camino have poor tread, stones and gravel which require greater skill with the bike. At times you may need to walk your bike to get around obstacles.
It is important to be in good physical shape to fully enjoy this trip. It is considered suitable for cyclists with a good to high level of fitness and who have a strong cycling technique. Minor roads with reduced traffic are customary on this trip and we recommend that you familiarise yourself with road cycling in light traffic in order to participate. *For safety & legal* reasons, we insist that cycle helmets be included as a compulsory item on your equipment list or provided with bike on request. *Helmets are mandatory in Portugal & Spain on all roads and paths.

Portuguese Camino Cycle - Porto to Santiago

I had a fabulous time doing the internal route Porto to Santiago de Compostela, self guided. I was on my own and I felt like I had so much support if anything had gone wrong. Accommodation and food was excellent. Recommend downloading the gps tracking app. Well organised.

Portuguese Camino Cycle - Porto to Santiago

05 Sep 2019

The Portugal ride was much more challenging and hilly than the Cycle Amsterdam to Paris trip, even though the distances each day were much less. The route follows the Portuguese Caminho (Portugal spelling) and there are some parts where you need to take a different route to avoid rocky steep tracks of the Caminho which can be difficult to find. It is a magnificent ride and the added spirit of being on a Caminho engenders camaraderie with the pilgrims walking the Caminho. "Bom Caminho" is often heard. The people are very friendly and the accommodation was excellent.
