Itinerary

Expand All

Day 1 : Arrive Ryde

Location: Ryde

Accommodation Name: The Wight House

Ideally, take the train to Portsmouth and then the ferry or hovercraft (world's last year-round passenger service hovercraft!) over to the island. Ryde is a typical seaside town, take your time to explore and maybe try traditional fish 'n' chips on the promenade.
Accommodation: The Wight House is situated at the higher end of town, close to the bike hire shop and with plenty of options to go for a meal around.

Day 2 : Ryde To Yarmouth 39Km / 24.25 Miles

Location: Isle of Wight

Accommodation Name: The Bugle Coaching Inn

A great first day's ride takes you from the busy suburbs of Ryde and Cowes, to the beach resort of Gurnard and then through the pastoral elegance inland, winding through Newtown and some beautiful small villages before rolling into Yarmouth, a pretty, historic seaside town. On the way, the big attraction is Queen Victoria’s Osborne House. This is a big site, so you will need to watch your time if you visit. There is also Quarr Abbey, St. Mildred's Church in Whippingham, and Cowes. Newtown was the original capital of the island, which was attacked by the French in 1377 and never recovered. The old townhall dates back to the 1690's and is now in the care of the National Trust along with much of the surrounding land. Finally, you push into the old town of Yarmouth with its small pier and castle as well as the attractive square, independent shops, cafes and church.
Accommodation: The Bugle Coaching Inn (room only) is a charming 16th century inn situated in the heart of Yarmouth's market square and only a stone's throw from the sea & harbour. Bike storage is through the back. Tea & coffee making facilities in the rooms, which are all en-suite.

Day 3 : Yarmouth To Chale (Via The Needles) 38 Km / 23.6 Miles

Location: Isle of Wight

Accommodation Name: The Wight Mouse Inn

A cycle ride full of beauty with some hills, including an optional couple of steep hairpins up to the New Battery at The Needles Park. From here you can go no further and have great views of the teeth-like stacks (The Needles) jutting out of the headland. It is not such a hard climb, and if you don’t want to cycle up, you could even walk or get the bus from the Alum Bay car park. Freshwater Bay then has a couple of attractions including a thatched church, then there is the (optional) chalky downland ride up and over the grassy downs called ‘The Tennyson Trail,’ this can also be bypassed if you don’t feel like it. The second half of the day is a bit easier with fast country roads, narrow winding lanes and pretty villages such as Brighstone, with some thatched cottages. Finally, returning nearer to the coast, you arrive at the village of Chale underneath St. Catherine’s Down with its medieval lighthouse, the oratory tower. Chale Bay was at one time known as the Bay of Death; sixty ships were lost here between 1746 and 1808. Nearby are the Wealdon Beds which have yielded fossilised remains of dinosaurs.
Accommodation: The Wight Mouse Inn is peacefully located with impressive views over the white cliffs from its big pub garden, explaining why this is such a popular place with locals and visitors alike. Rooms are spacious and en-suite with tea & coffee making facilities.

Day 4 : Chale To Ryde 42Km / 26 Miles

Location: Ryde

The final day is an interesting hilly mix of downs cycling and coastal stretches towards the end of the day. The route avoids the big tourist resorts of Ventnor, Shanklin and Sandown, opting for attractive hilly inland riding until you reach Bembridge. Here you pass around the estuarine harbour and there are a couple of venues for enjoying fresh crab or lobster. Then you are pedalling inland around pretty St. Helens with its harbour and attractive village green, before reaching the coast road at Seaview. The last few kilometres are a relaxing roll into Ryde along the coastal road, before climbing back into town to deliver your bike to the shop and return to your overnight accommodation.

Day 5 : End Of Tour

After breakfast make your way to the pier to catch your return ferry to the mainland.

  • Trip Grading & Preparation

Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

  • Route notes

While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.

  • How our self-guided holidays work

Self guided walking and cycling holidays offer freedom, independence and choice, allowing you to tailor your holidays in the UK & Europe to your interest and travel style. Our detailed Route Notes will contain all of the information you need to plan how you would like to approach each day, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. As you are not limited by the constraints of group travel, you are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so.

the landscape was beautiful and except for the first day easy to find and it left me some time to look left and right of the road for other sights and places on the island.

I was on the self guided Isle of Wight cycling tour. It all went smoothly, beginning with collecting the bike. The bike shop was friendly and helpful. The accommodation was comfortable and clean and in good locations near restaurants and shops. My bag was at each hotel when I arrived, and the route was easy to follow. I was given recommendations of where to stop and what tourist locations to visit which was very helpful.

Circumnavigating the Isle of Wight by bicycle is certainly a great adventure. So much history and relics to see as you ride gravel lanes and climb winding hills experiencing undulating country lanes and climbing to the summit of The exhilarating Needles. Any worries of luggage transfers are alleviated by an amazing door to door accommodation service including a great selection of bed and breakfast places. I did this ride solo and felt confident with the maps and information package provided by UTracks. Overall, a great adventure.

17 Sep 2020

The Tuesday and the Thursday were excellent with good weather, lovely views while cycling and plenty of interesting places to visit. The Wednesday was very wet indeed and blowing a gale. After leaving Yarmouth, the first stop was Alum Bay and the Needles. Two visits to both the Alum Bay restaurant and the Glass Factory dried us out and warmed us up enough to set-out on the second half of the journey. By the time that we arrived at the accommodation in Chale, the wind had dropped and the sun had come out. We travelled in the 2020 summer.
