Location: Amboise

Accommodation Name: 2 star Logis de France hotel

The old town boasts the still impressive remnants of what was a magnificent chateau as well as Le Clos Luce, a redbrick manor house that was the home of the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci for 3 years until his death in 1519. Chateau and Le Clos Luce (which incorporates a museum of models based on da Vinci’s designs) are both open to the public, each visit requiring approx. 1 hour. Overnight in Amboise, a picturesque town on the south bank of the Loire.
Accommodation: A fine provincial wood beamed 2 star Logis de France hotel at the heart of this historic town.

Day 2 : Amboise To Chenonceau 14.2 Km/8.8 Miles, 3.5 H

Location: Chenonceau

Accommodation Name: 2 star Logis de France hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast

Walking through the Foret d’Amboise to Chenonceau where you can have lunch and then spend the rest of the day visiting one of the very finest of the Loire chateaux, the ‘chateau shaped by women’ which ‘stretches across the River Cher in a perfect harmony of water, greenery, gardens and trees in a fine natural setting’. A visit takes up to 2 hours.
Accommodation: A comfortable 2 star Logis de France hotel, with wonderful exposed beams and a magnificent fireplace in the dining room.

Day 3 : Chenonceau To Montbazon 27 Km/16.7 Miles, 6.5 H (Can Be Shortened)

Location: Montbazon

Accommodation Name: Chateau d'Artigny

Meals Included: Breakfast

From Chenonceau, start with a short drive (included in tour price) through farmland from the valley of the Cher to that of the Indre and the village of Reignac. The route then follows the GR46 along the valley, through fields of sunflowers to the village of Montbazon on the edge of the city of Tours. A highlight of the day is the ancient Gallo-Roman bridge, which carries the GR41 across a tributary of the Indre. The last part of the day from Veigne to Montbazon is rather suburban and can be avoided by taking a short taxi ride from Veigne to shorten the day to 20.5 km/12.8 miles, 5 hours.
Accommodation: The 5* Chateau d'Artigny is one of the famous 'Relais et Chateaux' group of hotels. which is situated on a bluff with a fine view over the River Indre. Smart attire is recommended if you chose to dine here.

Day 4 : Montbazon To Azay-Le-Rideau. Choice Of Walks

Location: Azay-le-Rideau

Accommodation Name: hotel in Azay-le-Rideau

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today there are two alternatives to choose from.
Option 1: 17km/11 miles, 3.5 h - hire a taxi (approx 45-55 Euros) to take you from Montbazon to the celebrated gardens at Villandry, one of the wonders of France. From Villandry walk past the confluence of the Rivers Cher and Loire and along picturesque woodland paths and quiet roads to Azay le Rideau.
Both Villandry and Azay are awarded the highest accolade of ‘worth a journey’ by the Michelin Guide. The son et lumiere display at the Chateau is highly recommended for a delightful and memorable, if relatively expensive, stroll after dinner. Overnight at Azay-le-Rideau.
Option 2: 27.7km/17 miles, 6 h - the first is to follow the GR3 (long-distance trail extending the entire length of the Loire valley) from Montbazon along the banks of the Indre to the next night's stop at the evocatively named Azay-le-Rideau. On the way there is time to visit the former home of the novelist Balzac in the small chateau at Sache.
Accommodation: The hotel is set in a semi pedestrian street in the heart of this charming village and just 50 metres from the elegant chateau. You will find here, the charm of the past combined with the comfort of today. The 18th century house was built in a style typical of the Tours area. One of the features of the hotel is the 19th century school, situated across the flower decked patio and which, like the rest of the hotel, has been tastefully transformed into delightful accommodation.

Day 5 : Azay-Le-Rideau To Chinon 27 Km/16.7 Miles, 7 H

Location: Chinon

Accommodation Name: hotel in Chinon

Meals Included: Breakfast

There is time for a brief visit to the chateau of Azay, one of the gems of the Renaissance, before continuing your walk by way of the tiny village of St Benoit-la-Foret set in the midst of the vast forest of Chinon and on to Chinon itself, a mediaeval town dominated by the walls of its ruined castle and the centre of a well-known wine-growing region.
Accommodation: The hotel has the charm of an authentic dwelling-place built in the fifteenth century and modified in the eighteenth century. It is just a few hundred metres from the town centre, the medieval quarter and the chateau.

Day 6 : Chinon To Fontevraud 21 Km/13 Miles, 5 H

Location: Fontevraud

Accommodation Name: country house in Fontevraud

Meals Included: Breakfast

Allow yourself at least one to two hours to visit the chateau and its Jeanne d'Arc museum. You then continue your walk by crossing the River Vienne and follow its left bank downstream for a few km before striking off across the Foret de Fontevraud to the celebrated abbey of that name, the most extensive set of monastic buildings in France. The 12th Century abbey church houses the tombs of several Plantagenet royals.
Accommodation: The estate is a charming country house built with luminous limestone of the Loire Valley. The oldest part as well as the tithe barn date from the 13th century. This agricultural estate was owned by the same family from the beginning of the 18th century. After being entirely renovated, they now receive guests in a fine, elegant and comfortable atmosphere.

Day 7 : Fontevraud To Saumur 20 Km/12.5 Miles, 5 H

Location: Saumur

Accommodation Name: 3 star Logis hotel

Meals Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Continue your walk to Montsoreau, at the confluence of the Vienne and the Loire, where the caves in the river cliffs are used for mushroom cultivation. From Montsoreau continue through vineyards along the steep south bank of the Loire to Saumur, famous for its wines, cavalry school, and its chateau overlooking the Loire.

  • Trip Grading & Preparation

Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

  • Route notes

While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.

  • How our self-guided holidays work

Self guided walking and cycling holidays offer freedom, independence and choice, allowing you to tailor your holidays in the UK & Europe to your interest and travel style. Our detailed Route Notes will contain all of the information you need to plan how you would like to approach each day, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. As you are not limited by the constraints of group travel, you are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so.

As this was our first walking tour myself and hubby didn't really know what to expect. Once we understood how to read the waymarkers it was pretty easy. You definitely need your walking notes though. Accommodation was great, no complaints. The Chateau was amazing to stay in and the dinner (we paid for) was superb. We stayed an extra night in Chinon to break up our trip and the extra night in Sarlat was just what we needed. Loved everything about this walking tour and are already planning our next!

Being early in the season we did not encounter too many other travelers or huge crowds at Chateaus and Museums. The Chateaus and towns we visited were beautiful and the locals were very friendly and helpful. The hotel accommodation was good, comfortable and very clean. To visit the chateaus Azay le Rideau and the Fortresses Royale de Chinon we used the local bus on that day to allow time to enjoy these wonderful sites. The French countryside in Spring is very pretty and while we had a few showers the weather while walking was good. We would recommend this walking trip and options are possible if 30 km a day is a little daunting!

The only reason we put #4 and not #5 had nothing to do with UTracks! We were very early in the season with unseasonably wet, cold and muddy weather, plus we clearly weren’t up to 30k a day so taxied and trained but still managed 15-20k a day, and many more hours at the castles and chateaux than the ‘walk’ suggested! Otherwise, GPS tracker and written instructions were perfect though we didn’t use the printed A3 maps and actually don’t think we could have read them with the yellow highlighter blurring the field trails - otherwise all BRILLIANT. Only slightly disappointed with last night’s accommodation - others were SUPERB, THANK YOU!

The route notes were among the best I have used with only a few small points. There is an awful lot of straight forest paths which I happily accepted as the price to pay to get a good walking itinerary visiting so many chateaux. The meals included were excellent and the tour correctly graded.
