Day 1 : Arrive St. Ives

Location: St Ives

Accommodation Name: The Old Vicarage

Make your own way to St Ives. This beautiful cobble lane fishing village dates back to AD460, when the missionary St. Ia, daughter of an Irish chieftain, landed here and gave her name to the settlement in a similar way to how St. Beda gave her name to St. Bees in Cumbria. Protected from Atlantic storms, St. Ives was once the most important fishing port in Cornwall, but like elsewhere on the surrounding coast, by the beginning of the 20th century, the fish stocks became depleted, and the fishing fleet largely disappeared. However as early as 1811 Turner visited to paint the seascapes and by the late 1880s there were several painters in residence and the town became famous for its vibrant artists' colony. This perhaps reached its heyday during the late 1940s and the 1950s. Today their work can be seen in the St Ives Tate Gallery, with its popular roof restaurant, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Beranard Leach Gallery. A great place for fish & chips and extra nights are recommended.
Accommodation: There is a mixture of accommodation here but our 1st choice is a 4* guesthouse The Old Vicarage, set in the quieter part of St Ives.

Day 2 : St. Ives to Zennor 11 km/7 miles

Location: St. Ives

Accommodation Name: Tregeraint House B & B

Meals Included: Breakfast

Enjoy a hearty breakfast as there are some tough up and down and occasionally boggy walking for the next two days, but fortunately the days are quite short in distance and the seascapes are beautiful! Around St. Ives Head, the walk passes St. Nicholas’s Chapel (patron saint to seafarers) and a hut that was used for spotting pilchards from the cliffs. As you leave St.Ives the number of walkers rapidly diminishes, as does your pace as the path roller-coasts through a series of steep dips. After the River Cove, you descend to rocks where you can sometimes see seals basking off the rocks. There is then a final steep climb, from where you have to take a path going inland half a mile to the village of Zennor, which has a quaint church, a small museum on Cornish life, a great old pub called The Tinner’s Arms.
*D.H Lawrence, arrived here in 1916 and wrote ‘Woman in Love,’ inviting Katherine Mansfield over, but she was frightened by the seagulls and had to leave! Lawrence who had failed to pass the army medical and was married to a German, raised local suspicions. They presumed that the pair were spies signaling German submarines and they were officially ordered to leave! You might want to look out for the standing stones, ringed ‘quoits’ and other prehistoric remains on the moors above the village.
Accommodation: Tregeraint House B & B is a small guesthouse. Sue your host will make you more than welcome.

Day 3 : Zennor to Pendeen Watch 11 km/7 miles

Location: Pendeen

Accommodation Name: The North Inn

Meals Included: Breakfast

Returning to the coastal path, thread your way through beautiful coves to Gurnard’s Head. Being wary of tin mine shafts you can look around the prehistoric fort site at the head. Just before you reach Pendeen, there is Geevor tin mine which is open March to October for guided tours and at Pendeen Watch an afternoon visit to the lighthouse is possible.
Accommodation: Pendeen Watch, The North Inn dates back to 1860 and has been carefully restored to bring the old and new together.

Day 4 : Pendeen Watch to Sennen Cove 14.5 km/9 miles

Location: Sennen Cove

Accommodation Name: The Old Success Inn

Meals Included: Breakfast

The first part of the walk is quite easy, following the cliff tops around the old lead and tin mines, through the detritus of hundreds of years of activity. You pass Levant Mine that closed down in 1919 after an accident there killed 31 miners. However there is a restored steam engine which can be visited in the summer. Next is Crowns Mine at Botallack perched on the rocks. The path skirts inland beside Cape Cornwall, once thought to be England’s most westerly point, until they worked out that it was in fact Lands End. Continuing you pass Carn Gloose where a walled pit could be a Neolithic shrine. Then it is past the village of St. Just which has a square where ‘miracle plays’ were performed in Mediaeval times, then past the beach at Whitesand Bay to Sennan Cove, a pretty fishing and tourist port.
Accommodation: We stay at The Old Success Inn which dates back to the 17th century.

Day 5 : Sennan Cove to Mousehole 21 km/13 miles

Location: Land's End

Accommodation Name: The Ship Inn

Meals Included: Breakfast

Start your day early to enable you to visit the sights of Land’s End, the most westerly point in England. This is a highly developed commercial site, with various ‘attractions’ including a theme park! There can also be big crowds milling around the centre and car parks, however, there are some great seascapes with views as far as the Scilly Isles and towards Long Ships and Wolf Rock lighthouses. You continue your walk passing the attractive hamlets of Porthgwarra and St. Levan reaching the open air theatre at Minack point, dramatically situated and built by Rowena Cade. There follows a more challenging walk towards Penberth Cove and Porthguaron which are lovely places to pause. You will pass though Lamorna, with a famous once illegal old pub the ‘Lamorna Wink.’ The walk continues the walk around Penzer Point and views over Mounts Bay, and towards the island of St. Michael’s Mount. Next you will reach your destination of Mousehole (pron’Mowzl’), a picture postcard village, with a history of pilchard fishing and now has a small artists community.
Accommodation: The Ship Inn is located right by the harbour.

Day 6 : Mousehole to Penzance 6.5 km/4 miles

Location: Penzance

Accommodation Name: Torwood House

Meals Included: Breakfast

The path from Mousehole to Newlyn is beside the road but you can go inland via the village of Paul to see the monument erected to Dolly Pentreath (died 1778) regarded as the last native Cornish speaker who spoke no English. Newlyn and Penzance are quite built up being ports as well has important vacation destinations. Although Newlyn has some nice galleries, you may wish to catch the bus into Penzance from here. The latter has more attractions including some Georgian and Regency housing, the exuberant Egyptian House, Maritime Museum and National Lighthouse Museum.Accommodation: Our first choice accommodation is Torwood House it is a family run guesthouse. However we do use a number of guesthouses as this is a very busy town.

Day 7 : Penzance to Marazion 5 km/3 miles

Location: Penzance

Meals Included: Breakfast

This is a short walk today because there is so much to see and do in Penzance if you didn't get a chance to do it all the day before and also in Marazion. The town claims to be the oldest town in Britain and was called Ictis by the Romans which goes someway to indicate that the area was a trading post for tin in ancient times. The town has an active community of artists whose work you can see in many of the galleries. We recommend a visit to the iconic St Michael’s Mount.
Accommodation: We use various accommodation in this busy village. Most accommodation require a minimum 2 night stay. If we are unable to confirm in Marazion, a second night in Penzance will be booked. You can either catch the bus (15 min) or a return taxi transfer wil be booked (additional expense).

Day 8 : Marazion to Porthleven 17.75 km/11 miles

Location: Marazion

Accommodation Name: Harbour Inn

Meals Included: Breakfast

Today takes you from Mounts Bay with St. Michael's Mount sitting in the sea. This old abbey now a manor house has an ageless appeal and was traditionally linked to Mont St. Michel in Brittany. Round the corner from the Bay follow along some interesting sections of cliffs, with the remnants of tin mines. There are some beautiful bays and inlets associated with smuggling and then you will reach Porthleven, a pretty fishing and boating harbour that is closed by wooden baulks during storms. You can enjoy fine seafood at the inn or venture along the quay to a famous seafood restaurant.
Accommodation: Stay in the 4 * Harbour Inn by the quayside with old stone flags on the floor and oak beams and wood paneling in profusion. The bar retains the ambience of an old fisherman’s pub, and offers friendly service in traditional surroundings. If you are here on a Saturday there will often be entertainment as well.

Day 9 : Porthleven to The Lizard 24.15 km/15 miles

Location: The Lizard

Accommodation Name: The Caerthillian

Meals Included: Breakfast

Via the stunningly beautiful Kynance Cove and the pretty village of Mullion, which is at the heart of some of the finest walking. The sea at the Lizard has some interesting rock type’s country. From Gillan walk to Nare point and then across the Helford Passage You could have a lunch stop at the pub near the Frenchman’s Creek made famous by Daphne Du Maurier, before following part of the beautiful Helford River and the coastal path to the impressive Trebah Gardens. You then walk into Falmouth, the biggest town on our route.

  • Trip Grading & Preparation

Match your level of fitness & requirements Please read this information carefully to find out which grade is most suited to your level of fitness and requirements. To make the most of your Walkers' Britain holiday it is essential and your responsibility to choose a trip that is well within your capabilities. All our active holidays are graded and clearly marked in each trip description. All mountains have uphill and downhill sections and by definition walking and cycling demand some effort. However all things are relative, and these grades assume that you are a reasonably active person who enjoys walking or cycling. Few trips are extreme and most allow ample time for sightseeing and enjoying the scenery. If in doubt about the grade of any holiday, please contact us for advice or request the tour dossiers, you can also chat with our team about the right travel insurance for you. Grade 1 – Introductory These trips involve walking for four to five hours per day or cycling for 15-50 km per day at a slow but steady pace. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health. Suggested Preparation 30 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (either road cycling or jogging), three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 2 – Introductory to Moderate These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity but including several moderate stages. Grade 3 – Moderate These adventures involve walking for up to six hours per day or cycling for up to 65 km per day, at a steady pace. You will need a good level of fitness and be in good health. Suggested Preparation 45 minutes of aerobic-type exercise (road cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. Grade 4 – Moderate to Challenging This trip grading involves a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity but including several challenging stages. Grade 5 – Challenging These active holidays involve walking up to nine hours per day in mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, pass crossing & alpine weather conditions, or cycling for up to 80 km per day over undulating terrain, with some steep and sustained hills. You will need an excellent level of fitness, be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kg and be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions. Suggested Preparation 1 hour of aerobic-type exercise five times a week for three to six months leading up to your trip. We also recommend regular hill walking with a pack in variable weather conditions or road cycling.

  • Route notes

While our tours vary in terms of difficulty, route finding is made simple and convenient with our specially prepared package of maps and route notes. On many of the walks it is easy enough to navigate carefully using the route notes provided with a cursory glance at the map. As holidays reach the higher grades, you will need to take more care and we would expect you to have at least some knowledge of using a compass. Maps for our tours also vary considerably, from up-to-date GPS referenced additions, to old map copies which may still be the only ones obtainable for a particular area. The differences in style, grade and destinations of our tours are features that make them of continual interest and delight to our walkers & cyclists. Each set of route notes can contain the following elements relevant to the route: History and information on the region and the route you are walking. Detailed maps including points of interest and accommodation. Detailed step-by-step descriptions (with pictures) of the route and information on detours/optional additions. Transport timetables and information for getting there and away. Safety information and advice. Contact details of accommodation, transport, local representatives and emergency support. Advice for things to do along the way. Suggestions for dining and self catering.

  • How our self-guided holidays work

Self guided walking and cycling holidays offer freedom, independence and choice, allowing you to tailor your holidays in the UK & Europe to your interest and travel style. Our detailed Route Notes will contain all of the information you need to plan how you would like to approach each day, giving you the freedom to set your own pace. As you are not limited by the constraints of group travel, you are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so.

South West Coastal Path: St Ives to Mevagissey

5 Jul 2024

We took a beautiful walk from St. Ives to Mevagissey. We found the west coast especially spectacular and impressive. The walks were easy; at the end the daily distances were sometimes too long for us; solved by taking the bus/taxi. The hotels and B&Bs were generally very nice with good beds and showers. The breakfast was well prepared and almost everywhere the reception was very hospitable and helpful. The combination of coast and greenery, the towns and villages with the sea constantly on your right was wonderful. We also had fantastic weather, with sun and blue skies every day except for one day. Cornwall at its best! The materials and preparation in advance by the company were top notch, the luggage transport went smoothly. Thanks for that! ...more ...less

3 Sep 2023

We made this tour in August 2023. The landscapes were wonderful. The service was lovely in almost all the hotels included in the itinerary. Somewhere the path is not in good conditions, so some days is was quite hard to complete the itinerary only by walking.
