WASHINGTON DC–WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA Pennsylvania’s Past & Present Journey further north to Williamsport, as the landscape in Pennsylvania changes from rolling hills and farms to scenic river views, exposed rock formations and large sycamore trees in the Tioga State Forest. Today the lumber barons are long gone but their Victorian mansions still stand, and the town has traded lumber for America’s favorite pastime, baseball. (B) TOUR HIGHLIGHT FREEDOM ROAD Williamsport was an important point in the Underground Railroad. In 1867, Frederick Douglass spoke to a crowd at The Doebler House, a hotel that possibly worked with the Underground Railroad, housing people as they moved north. The Freedom Road area offered caves in wooded areas, barns, secret hiding places, and the friends and family of Daniel Hughes discreetly provided shelter, food, and assistance to people traveling north to freedom.
